Do you mean No. I have a BSA No. 1 MkIII with 1918 below the B.S.A. Co inscription on the right wrist. It has a four digit serial no.

With the letter J above it on the RH side of the receiver in front of the bolt. Does ithave BSA on the wrist or just a B. If it has just a B you could have a WWII dispersal rifle and these. Rifles maynot be as complete with their markings.

The serial number probably woldn't have a letter prefix and may be located on the wrist. To my knowledge there are no No.1 Mk4 rifles and No.

4 MkIs were made in North America. I have a BSA.303 with serial number 44179.

That is the full serial number. It appears to be a no1 mk4.

Can anyone help in identifying this fifle? We do need more information than what you have provided. PICTURES are worth a thousand words. The Number 1 Rifle had open sights halfway up the barrel, and usually information on the right side of the butt socket at the rear of the receiver. The Number 4 Rifle had a peep sight at the rear of the receiver, and the barrel extends about 3 inches from the front of the forestock. Usually the information is on the left side of the butt socket and left side of the receiver. Also, there is usually a Letter associated with the serial numbers. I am unable to get my pics to upload from my phone, but it does not have a letter anywhere near any of the serial numbers.

44179 is stamped to the right of the bolt, on the bolt and under the rear sight which is mounted toward the rear of the barrel. On the left side is stamped 'BSAco' and on the right below the bolt handle is 'England'.

It also has several stamped crowns with 'BM' below them and had the 'Factory Thoroigh Repair' in 1953. I can however send pictures via text if someone pm's me a number. In my opinion, your rifle was made by BSA (That is why it has a 'BSA Commercial' marked barrel.) 'between the wars' (Birmingham Military Proofs) for the Union of South Africa' (South African marks). I own one of its cousins which has those markings. The lack of a Crowned GR mark on the wrist would confirm this opinion. At some point it was FTR'd (Factory Thorough Repair.). It may have moved in to UK ownership prior to this or it may have simply been FTR'd here. The second set of Birmingham Proof marks (Crowned BNP) were, again in my opinion, done because of the FTR.Put kindly, it has been 'sporterised'.Last edited by Beerhunter; at 03:53 AM.
